Unhealthy Foods for Your Teeth

Unhealthy Foods for Your TeethYour diet can make a big difference in your dental health. For instance, fresh fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins needed for strong teeth and healthy gums. Likewise, milk and dairy products are also great for your teeth and jaw bones because they contain bone-building calcium. Some foods are not so healthy for your teeth, though. Limiting or avoiding these foods can help you keep your teeth strong and your gums healthier.

1. Sports drinks, energy drinks, juice, and soda
These drinks may seem like a sweet way to rehydrate, but they tend to be high in sugar and acids. This contributes to tooth decay, enamel erosion, and cavities. They are also often full of artificial or natural dyes, which can sink into the enamel and stain your teeth. Use a straw to reduce contact between teeth and drinks, and then rinse with water afterwards to dilute the acid.

2. Candy
Sweet snacks can give you a fast boost of energy, but they are also feeding oral bacteria. These bacteria can produce acids that continue to attack your teeth for 20 minutes after you have finished your treat. It is best to skip candy, sugary gum, and starchy foods. Instead, try eating foods that are filling and tooth-healthy, like yogurt, raw veggies, or string cheese.

3. Lemons
Lemonade and lemons are extremely acidic. As a result, lemons can quickly erode the enamel on your teeth, leaving you vulnerable to sensitivity and tooth decay. For a tasty but healthier alternative to lemonade, slice your lemon and use it to infuse a pitcher of ice water overnight.

4. Medications
Cough syrup, cough drops, and throat lozenges may seem like a must-have when you have a cold, but sucking on these sugary medications can be just as bad for your teeth as sucking on candy all day. Use sugar-free medications whenever possible.
