Habits That Damage Your Teeth

Habits That Damage Your TeethCertain habits are necessary to perform in order to have a healthy smile. You should brush your teeth every day and schedule routine dental examinations with a Los Angeles dentist at least twice a year. You should also maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet that is filled with vitamins and minerals that are essential for good overall health. But there are also habits that need to be avoided so that you do not prematurely damage the aesthetics or function of your teeth.

Most people remember to brush every day, but not everyone remembers to floss. Flossing is just as important to your daily dental hygiene routine as brushing since flossing can remove bacteria and food particles that get caught between the teeth and gums. Many dentists will recommend brushing after every meal, but you should not brush immediately after eating. The enamel on your teeth is weak right after you eat or drink something, so brushing immediately after a meal could actually be doing more harm than good. Wait about 30 minutes after a meal before brushing. And if you do not have a toothbrush handy, you can rinse your mouth out with water to help remove stains and bacteria.

Grinding your teeth is a common habit, especially if you are stressed. But grinding can create cracks and chips on your teeth. It can also damage your jaw joints, making it difficult to chew and speak. Many people have a tendency to chew on ice cubes or their fingernails, but these habits can also negatively impact your teeth.
