Sharp, zinging sensations in the teeth are not only painful, but annoying, as well. This zinging is occurring because your teeth have become sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This means foods, drinks, and even the air at extreme temperatures can cause tooth pain. There are several reasons why this may hav developed for you.
Brushing
Brushing Habits and Tooth Enamel
Brushing the teeth is an important and necessary task in maintaining a heathy smile, but it must be done correctly. Brushing too hard will cause abrasion, which essentially means you are brushing off your dental enamel. Enamel protects the teeth, and without it, extreme temperatures can reach the nerves, which is what causes the pain. Our dentist can show you the best way to brush without causing damage.
Eating acidic foods
Eating foods high in acidity is damaging in much the same way. Acid abrades the teeth and scratches away the protective enamel. If you are trying to prevent tooth sensitivity, try to avoid foods and drinks such as sodas, alcoholic drinks, berries, as well as sugars and other sweeteners.
Gum recession
Gum disease can cause the gum line to recede, which will leave the roots exposed. This means hot and cold substances and climates can affect this unprotected, sensitive area. If you are feeling pain due to sensitivity, it may be due to infected gums, which should be treated right away.
Bruxism
Some patients do not realize they habitually grind their teeth (also known as bruxism), because it mostly occurs during sleep. This force can cause serious wear, leading to misshapen teeth. It also leads to loss of enamel.
